Honey Restaurant (Thai)

I've been asking around for a few months where the best "local" Thai food is.  The two places people recommended were the Banana Leaf in Adliya and Honey Restaurant by the Gold Souk. I tried Banana Leaf not so long ago (see review), and now I tried Honey.  Both were good, but Honey's is my pick over the two.  Just around the corner from the Gold Souk, you'll see the restaurant.  Once you go in, you'll probably get hit in the face with a little fish smell. This is ok, because the food is delicious. My wife and I ordered a feast to include the papaya salad, wantons, green curry with garlic rice and Hammour fish with cashew (spicy) (3BD). As you can see, the portions are huge and most items on the menu run about 2-3BD each.  Everything was very good, but the Hammour was my favorite. The entire meal with a couple soft drinks was 11BD.

Vesuvio (Pizza)

Have you every ordered your pizza by the meter? That's how it's ordered up at Vesuvius, located in the Best Western in Juffair. The oven isn't ready until 7pm, so plan accordingly.  I went with a few other people using our buy one get one free Entertainer coupons.  We ordered the 1/4 meter Margherita (4.5BD) and the 1/4 meter pepperoni Lovers (5.0BD).  The pizza is then rolled out on a cart and served at the table.  Overall, not a bad experience.  However, I'm not sure I would go back without the coupon.

Tea Club (Jupiter Burger)

The Tea Club is one of my favorites at Amwaj. No, it's more than a place for the ladies to have tea; they have a pretty good food menu as well. On this trip, I had to try the Jupiter Burger (4.4BD). The menu reads a beef burger from space with a crispy cheese bomb, cheddar slices, iceberg lettuce and tomato. As you can tell by the picture, the cheese bomb was the hit of this sandwich! Once you bite into this monster, the cheese comes oozing out like molten lava.  The burger was excellent and a must try for the burger fans out there.

Mohd Noor Al-Bokhari (Biryani and Chops)

If you're looking to try a little "local", then I would definitely recommend Mohd Noor. The restaurant is located just up the street from Iskenderun Grill, near Expedition Ave. My friend and I ordered the "mechanical" chicken, also know to most westerners as rotisserie chicken and rice. The chicken and rice was served on a platter the size of a hub cap, it was huge.  In addition to the chicken and rice, we ordered some lamb chops.  Everything was absolutely delicious.  Despite giving it a great effort, we couldn't finish off all the rice.  The chicken, rice, chops and drinks came to 5.2BD.  One observation I did note was the downstairs main entrance was all men.  Families that were eating entered the side door and dined in the "family" section.

Vesuvio

Some friends and I went over to Vesuvio in Juffair (In the Best Western) to try their pizza and use one my Entertainer Guide coupons.  Unfortunately, the pizza oven wasn't ready until 7pm, so we had to change course and order something else of the menu.  I ordered the Vesuvius Burger and my friends ordered the Chicken Parmesan.  The burger was a 1/2lb monster, with sun-dried tomato, a fried egg and beef or pork bacon. I ordered the pork bacon on the sandwich; however, I'm told the bacon was more European style, almost like baked ham.  Overall the burger was pretty good, but for almost 5BD, I was expecting more out of the plate.  As I've stated on other posts, the bun usually makes it or breaks it for me, and I felt a little disappointed with the bun.  My friends reported the Chicken Parmesan (5.2BD)  was very good, with a nice helping of spaghetti alongside. Although we made out with the Entertainer Guide coupon, we still got hit with a 1.8 service charge.

Sombreo's (Breakfast)

If you're a fan of Sombreo's taco shop (see previous review), then you'll really enjoy the breakfast menu they offer.  I stopped in and tried the Machaca burrito (2BD). I ordered it with shredded beef, eggs, bell pepper and onion. Wow, it was a great breakfast burrito.  The question is how many burritos should you eat.  I had one and it was filling; however, it was really good and I was tempted to order a second.  One is filling, two would surely make you very full.

Tony Lukes (Wingman Promotion)

My friend and I just visited Tony Luke's in Juffair to check out their new "Wingman" promotion.  They are offering either "bone-in" or "boneless" serving of either 8 (1.4BD), 16 (2.3BD) , 24 (3.5BD), 50 (6.4BD) or 100 (11.5BD) wings at a very reasonable price.  There are 10 different flavors to choose from: Mild Buffalo, Hot Buffalo, Super Hot Buffalo, Honey BBQ, Garlic Parmesan, Cajun Crunch, Asian Zing, Lemon Pepper, Spicy Garlic and Jamaican Jerk.
All of the the flavors have a very distinct taste. If you've had the Tony Luke's flavored fries, you'll know what I'm talking about.  My favorite was a tie between the Cajun Crunch and the Spicy Garlic. The Hot and Super Hot Buffalo were very good as well.  I'm not sure which one got me, either the Hot or Super Hot Buffalo, but after a few wings, I had a little tear in my eye and heat on the lips. We also tried both the bone-in and the boneless wings.  This is going to be personal preference, but we both preferred the "bone-in." If you ask me, Bahrain has been lacking a good place for wings at a reasonable price, and I think Tony Luke's and their Wingman promotion has just filled that void.
